Introduction of the Progressive Wage Model (PWM) in the Security Sector
Have you heard of the Progressive Wage Model (PWM)?
The PWM is a wage structure introduced by the government to uplift low-wage resident workers in several sectors, and has also recently been implemented for the security sector.

Great news! This means that with the PWM, there has been new plans established to increase the basic wages in the Security industry, such as the five-level career progression structure developed by the Security Tripartite Cluster (STC) for security officers in Singapore.

It was enacted to raise the wages of security workers through upgrading skills and improving productivity, and covers all Singapore citizens and permanent residents (PRs) employed by licensed security agencies. With effect from 1st September 2016, all security agencies must adhere to the PWM requirements in order to obtain or renew their licenses.
2
Gross Wage Levels for Security Officers
With the PWM in place, workers in the security industry can look forward to attractive gross wages in the coming few years!
To put things in perspective, most jobs in the market currently offer a wage range of $1,500 - $2,100, which means that jobs in the Security industry actually offer really competitive wages with the PWM scheme as compared to other roles in other industries.

Hence, now is the prime time to take up a job or even switch your career to the Security sector and capitalise on the gradual rise in wages over the next few years offered by the PWM.

Wage Requirements
The following table shows the five-level career progression for security officers, with the respective requirements and skills needed for each level.
Progressive wages are also set for each level to ensure that security officers earn an amount that corresponds to their skills and productivity.

No longer a watchman's job
If you fear that Security jobs are commonly seen as a job that is just "a waste of time sitting down all day", fret not!
Security guards no longer fit the stereotype of simply being watchmen idling at their guard posts. Instead, the sector is now robust with advanced technology that helps Security Officers in their day-to-day work.

For example, Security Officers stationed at schools now utilise facial recognition technology to monitor the flow of students and teachers entering the school. This ensures that no trespassers are allowed, minimising threat in schools.
5
Many different roles currently available in the Security Industry
Unlike in the past where security roles were largely similar, the Security Industry of today comprises a wide array of positions from which you can choose from.
There are many different security jobs specialising in different aspects, such as Events Security, Concierge Security, Bar / Club Bouncers, Close Protection Officers / Bodyguards, Security Escorts, and Private Investigators, to name a few.

In order to be proficient at these positions, different specific skill sets must be picked up for an individual to successfully become a Security Officer specialising in one of these fields.

For instance, a Security Officer who works as a Bar/Club Bouncer must be equipped with proper techniques to manage disorderly conduct and threatening behaviour. On the other hand, Events Security Officers must have knowledge in conducting X-Ray Security Screening on patrons while also being adept in crowd and traffic control.
